Inside Taiwan
Tonight, Inside Taiwan takes you to
a small school... with a big heart.
Drums! Bagpipes! Marching soldiers!
What's going on, Michelle?
Bob, I'm standing outside the theater in Longtan,
Taoyuan, where, in just about 1/2 an hour
A group of elementary school kids,
led by their teacher, Teacher Barry,
will be performing
a Scottish marching tune:
The Skye Boat Song.
This is the kind of thing
we’re taiking about, Bob
Notice those things that look like vacuum
cleaners with legs? Those are bagpipes.
and the drums keep everybody marching
in time, Bob…
Michelle,thats a lot of stuff…
Are they gonna be ready?
Bob, earlier today I spoke to Teacher Barry
And I put that very question to him
Teacher Barry, months of heartbreak,
sweet, hours of marching up snd down
It all comes down to tonight. Tell me
are you ready?
We’re ready, Michelle
The real question is…
Are you ready for us, Taiwan?
I guess that takes care of that question.
A very confidant Teacher Barry talking to me
earlier this afternoon, Bob
One man...one class...and one dream.
Inside Taiwan has the story.
It was in this old converted classroom
that work first began in April
on what seemed to be at that time
a crazy dream.
You’re crazy...You’ll never do it…
That’s Impossible!
Security is tight.
Yeah?
Hi, this is Michelle from F.E.S.
Can I come in?
Got some i.d.?
Finally, I’m in the so-called ”Practise Room.”
It’s like the middle of a war zone in here.
Hi! You must be Teacher Barry.
Tell me about your project.
Yes, this project is very difficult…
Born in Scotland, Teacher Barry experienced
at an early age, the thrill of watching the
pipes and drums march past his highland home.
We’ve got a complete workshop here…
Everything...bagpipes, drums…
One of the reasons Scottish marching
has never been seen in Taiwan before is…
I think…
these bagpipes are so darn difficult to make.
Couldn’t you just buy them?
Over the next few weeks,Teacher Barry
and the band members worded tirelessly
practicing three, four, even five hours a day.
Tempers sometimes got a little frazzled.
Jeez! Can’t you guys count?
One...two...then three!
OK. Forget it. Just go home.
Oh! I just want to sleep!
I hate Teacher Barry!
As time went on, though
the relentless practice sessions
began to have an impact
and the mood began to change.
Success seemed suddenly not so remote.
You did it! Awesome!
Quite a story, Michelle?
Yes, I’m still here, Bob.
Michelle, in your report you mentioned...
Bob...I’m gonna have to interrupt you…
The show is about to get underway.
So let’s go and check it out…
That’s wonderful! That’s great!
How do you feel?
I’m so happy...I...I...I don’t know what to say!
Congratulations,Teacher Barry!
Back to you, Bob.
Good stuff, Michelle.
This is Bob Mackarel saying goodnight.
